Gems from AJCP Trove #2

Date:
By Mr Neil Bradley

After I discovered the joys of hunting around the AJCP on Trove thanks to Bevan Carter, I stumbled on the Lancashire Records Office and spotted an entry entitled "Orders for commutation of death sentences to transportation (78pp)". Now my great great great grandfather, Samuel Bradley, had been sentenced to death at Lancaster Castle in 1824 for theft (it wasn't his first offence and it was a bit more than a loaf of bread!).

Low and behold I found it!! This is the actual document commuting his sentence to life transportation to New South Wales and the Islands adjacent!

A magic moment in 20 plus years of researching the family.

Check out the links for AJCP Trove under Geni Links and see what you can find!

Wow!! What a find. AJCP materials are rich in information but daunting to access. I can imagine the elation. Well done for persisting.

A fantastic find. What gets me is the superb quality of the paper - no tears or missing edges and beautifully readable. Did you realise that you discovered this just over 99 years since it was written on the 16th April 1824? You're only here because of this piece of paper! A truly significant piece of writing.
