'Our lives were changed by unexpected DNA test results'

DNA tests used to be only the stuff of paternity suits and scandalous daytime talk shows. Now, they are the kind of thing you buy your loved ones for Christmas.

At-home DNA tests are more affordable than ever, relatively easy to use and marketed as a bit of fun for people who are curious about their heritage. But do we really think about what we're doing when we take them?

In The Gift, journalist Jenny Kleeman explores the unintended consequences of testing your DNA. As a new bonus episode investigates a cyber attack on ancestry site 23andMe that affected the data of up to 7 million of its users, Jenny reveals what she found out when she met six people whose lives had been changed forever by surprise DNA results.

Fifteen episodes are currently available, with three to come.

You can listen here on the BBC4 website or wherever you access your podcasts.

The series is also reviewed in today's Review magazine as part of the Weekend Australian.
