WA Korean War Dead Project - Josie Millwood
This year on the 27th of July the Perth Korean War Memorial in Kings Park will be unveiled. The 27th July is the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended active hostilities on the Korean peninsula. This memorial means the 35 West Australians who died as a result of the Korean War will have a dedicated place of remembrance in their home state.
Who are these men, and what are their stories? I have attempted to answer these questions by gathering together the scattered fragments of information about these men in order that their stories live on. These soldiers and airmen came from both privileged and poor backgrounds and saw service in Korea as possibly an opportunity to pay back debts, advance professionally, defeat the communist threat or even as a bit of a lark.
These men are remembered with respect and gratitude in Korea to this day. After several visits to their places of commemoration in Korea, I want to ensure that they are remembered as more than just a name on a memorial in Western Australia.
Lest we forget.
