"Down the Street" 

Since European settlement in Western Australia in 1829, small towns emerged across rural districts beyond Perth and Fremantle. My hometown of Northampton in the Midwest region was gazetted in 1864, although lead and copper mining had already been operating there since 1855.

Just after the turn of the twentieth century, Northampton underwent enormous change. A railway line extended northward and, with it, the town’s heart shifted too. Shops, businesses and community life gradually moved further up the street, reshaping the town centre and rhythm of daily life.

This is a journey “Going Down the Street” — tracing Northampton’s main street’s evolution, its buildings, businesses and people, and following a town’s changing face over time.
